Space to Think: Latin American Parent’s Group

A Space to Think brings together diverse groups of people, such as social and community activists, community organisers, third sector and civil society organisations, people who aren’t part of any formal group, and policy makers at Borough and London-wide levels, to discuss some of the burning topics and concerns that Londoners face.

Over the past several years, IRMO (Indoamerican Refugee and Migrant Organisation) has been working with a group of Latin American parents, and towards the end of 2019, they reached out to High Trees for some support to help the group move forward. In December 2019, the Space to Think partners joined IRMO and Latin American parents to hold a session to discuss the issues that Latin American women and parents face in London.

During the discussion, the key issues which came up were: language barriers, isolation, lack of networks and information and discriminatory services. They also looked at the areas in which improvements needed to happen, these included: access to work (especially for mothers), more equal access to services, affordable and good quality housing, more equal relationships with landlords and agents and an end to bullying in schools.
