At High Trees our learners span across all age ranges. This academic year so far, we’ve supported 530 learners, with 18% aged 55-64 and 6% aged 65 and over. Encouraging lifelong learning, especially among older adults, can play a significant role in reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation.
We recently spoke to Irma, a learner at High Trees, who at 71 is a shining example that it’s never too late to start learning. Originally from Colombia, Irma began learning English at High Trees in 2023, having never had the chance to attend school in her home country. When she moved to London over 20 years ago, her focus was on supporting her family, leaving little time for study. Now, in her early seventies, Irma has embraced the opportunity to learn, proving that age is no barrier to education.
Irma shares that she wants to gain independence by learning English, so that she doesn’t have to rely on her friends and family for translation. She first enrolled in ESOL Entry 2 and joined the Conversation Club, where her excellent attendance and positive attitude quickly made her a standout student. With determination and the support of her teachers, Irma made remarkable progress and was invited to enrol on to an accredited course. Having completed that course, she is currently studying English Functional Skills Entry 1 and preparing to take exams in July 2024.
Irma is very enthusiastic about learning English. When she was younger, she dreamed of becoming a nursery teacher, but couldn’t pursue her dream due to a lack of formal education. However, now that she is developing her English skills, she feels inspired to continue with her ambition of helping others and is looking to volunteer in a hospital.
Studying at High Trees has opened up new opportunities for Irma. She says, “I like everything at High Trees. All the tutors are incredible; they make you feel welcome. I can tell I am making progress here.” Irma’s journey is a testament to her resilience, commitment, and determination, and she continues to inspire her classmates daily, demonstrating that the benefits of learning English can be enjoyed at any age.
