In September 2023, the Building Young Brixton Partnership launched a new capacity building support offer for local youth organisations in Lambeth. We are pleased to say that five local organisations have already benefitted from the scheme. They have been supported to assess their current mentoring practice against the GLA’s Mentoring Quality Framework and to identify areas for improvement. Each organisation is also being given the opportunity to develop their mentoring practice by attending joint training and share and learn sessions.
Organisations taking part in the training reported feeling more confident and knowledgeable in their mentoring approach, as a result of the sessions. One participant from the Indoamerican Refugee and Migrant Organisation (IRMO) said that due to the sessions, “I feel more confident about how to approach and react to young people.” Another participant shared that, “The training has definitely enhanced my understanding and knowledge which will help frame my interactions with young people and especially parents.”
This scheme builds on extensive work already taken across the BYB partnership to expand a high-quality mentoring offer to young people across Lambeth. In the last year more than 95 practitioners from across the partner organisations have been able to benefit from training in important areas such as Gangs & Contextualised Safeguarding, Child Criminal Exploitation and Mental Health First Aid.
